A themed afternoon of refreshments and entertainment for some 30 residents of Arbors Care Center in Toms River, NJ, a center known for providing individually tailored skilled nursing and therapy services for geriatric, postoperative, orthopedic, cardiac and other patients. The twist at the meeting of Arbors Care Center’s Red Hat Society, however, comes from the creative red hats, decorated by the residents in their arts and crafts classes at the center.

The group began meeting over a year ago by coordinating an arts and crafts project involving the hats with a social event. The theme of the most recent gathering was “All Things Irish.” Accordingly, the event featured Irish music, Irish trivia contests, green lemonade, and cupcakes with green icing, along with coffee and tea. Door prizes were also awarded. Themes often center on holidays, such as the recent “Sweetheart Tea” held in observance of Valentine’s Day in February.
